Introduction
Whether you are learning French for the first time or building advanced language proficiency, Cornerstone’s French as a Second Language program offers a structured pathway to help you move forward.
Skill development
Students develop speaking, listening, reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary through practical lessons and guided activities.
Levels & placement
The program includes ten levels aligned from A1.1 to C1.2. Before beginning classes, every student completes the Cornerstone FSL Placement Test to determine the most appropriate starting level.

Program levels
The FSL program includes ten progressive options. Students are placed into the appropriate level based on their placement test results.
Placement test
All students must complete the Cornerstone FSL Placement Test before being assigned to a class.
The assessment helps the academic team evaluate the student’s current French proficiency and identify the most appropriate starting level.
Students with no previous French experience may begin at A1.1. Students who have previously studied French will be placed according to their demonstrated proficiency.
The placement test may evaluate areas such as:
Curriculum focus
Throughout the program, students develop the four essential areas of language learning.
Parler
Participate in conversations, express opinions, ask questions, and communicate in everyday and professional situations.
Écouter
Understand spoken French in conversations, instructions, presentations, and common real-life situations.
Lire
Read and understand messages, articles, instructions, workplace materials, and increasingly complex texts.
Écrire
Develop clear written communication using appropriate grammar, vocabulary, structure, and tone.
Students will also improve their pronunciation, cultural awareness, confidence, and ability to communicate with French speakers in different contexts.
Admissions
No previous knowledge of French is required for students entering Level A1.1. Applicants seeking entry into a higher level must demonstrate the required French proficiency through the placement assessment.
Complete Cornerstone’s program application and enrolment process.
Complete the Cornerstone FSL Placement Test before being assigned to a level.
Provide the identification and enrolment documentation requested by the college.

Weekday evenings, Monday – Thursday 5:30 – 8:45 pm and Friday 5:30 – 8:30 pm, for 16 hours of weekly French instruction.

PTIRU classification
The ten FSL options may appear under two PTIRU program classifications. The classification that applies to a student depends on the total tuition and duration included in a single enrolment contract.
A student is enrolled in French as a Second Language (Approved) when one or several FSL levels included in a single enrolment contract result in:
Career relevance
French communication skills may support students interested in working in bilingual or French-speaking environments.
This program focuses on French language development. It does not provide professional certification or prepare students for one specific regulated occupation.
The French as a Second Language program does not lead directly to certification or licensing in a regulated career occupation.
Therefore, no occupational regulator link applies to this program.
Completion of the program does not guarantee employment, professional licensing, or eligibility for a particular occupation.

Le personnel est si gentil et amical. Les professeurs que j'ai eus étaient des experts dans leurs propres domaines et avaient beaucoup à partager. Je n'ai rien à me plaindre. Cela fait trois mois que je vis à Vancouver et je peux dire avec confiance que mon expérience au Collège Cornerstone a été exceptionnelle. Les cours sont fantastiques et le Service des carrières est une partie essentielle de l'école. Ils sont vraiment dévoués à connecter les étudiants avec le marché du travail et à soutenir notre croissance professionnelle. J'ai eu le privilège de recevoir des conseils de Helin, qui a été incroyablement soutenant depuis la première fois que nous nous sommes rencontrés. Elle a pris le temps de me connaître personnellement et de comprendre mon parcours afin de m'aider à trouver des opportunités d'emploi qui correspondaient à mon expérience et à mes objectifs. Les ateliers qu'elle a animés étaient extrêmement précieux - j'ai appris à adapter mon CV et à réussir les entretiens d'embauche de style canadien. Helin m'a également aidé à m'entraîner à travers des entretiens fictifs, ce qui m'a beaucoup plus confiant. French as a Second Language (Approved) was reviewed and approved by the registrar of the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.
French as a Second Language (Approval Not Required)
This program does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. As such, PTIRU did not review this program.
The regulatory classification applicable to each student will be identified in the student’s enrolment contract.
Program approval
French as a Second Language (Approved) was reviewed and approved by the registrar of the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.
The regulatory classification that applies to each student is determined by the total tuition and duration included in the student’s enrolment contract.
Participate in instructor-led French classes through the distance delivery option when available.
Delivery options, schedules, and campus availability may vary by intake and level.
Study French weekday evenings for 16 hours per week — Monday – Thursday 5:30 – 8:45 pm and Friday 5:30 – 8:30 pm — while maintaining flexibility for other commitments.
Learn in an inclusive college environment alongside students from different countries and backgrounds.
After completing the placement test, prospective students can join the waiting list to receive information about available levels, schedules, and upcoming intake dates.
Meet any additional requirements identified in the applicable student enrolment contract.

The final tuition and related fees will depend on the number of FSL levels included in the student’s enrolment contract.
The applicable tuition, registration fee, material fee, program duration, start date, and regulatory classification will be clearly identified before the student signs the enrolment contract.
Fees are subject to Cornerstone’s applicable tuition refund policy.
