Public Safety for NewcomersJoin us in this group discussion to learn more about public safety in Canada. Our next Cornerstone TALK on “Public Safety for Newcomers, Immigrants and International Students” is on Thursday, 19th May, 10:00 -11:30 am & 6:00-7:30 pm.

Who is our guest speaker?

The talk will be led by our Administration Director, Alaleh Shah Ali, volunteering as a Program Manager for Strathcona Community Policing Centre. Joining Alaleh, four guest speakers will introduce us to different topics Jessica Neilson, Zoe Parro, Sam Khoshnoond and Sara Hooge.

Jessica Neilson, an Ecomm dispatcher for Strathcona CPC where 99% of calls from BC have been handled. Zoe Parro, a Security Office, Zoe has been working in different community services such as a volunteer in Skid Row (Los Angeles), a Posters Place Food Bank and a volunteer in an orphanage in the Philippines. Sam Khoshnoond, a Correctional Officer, Sam has experience in de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques and Sara Hooge, a security officer, Sara has experience in Mental Health Awareness knowledge and Crisis Intervention and De-escalation.

What will we be discussing?

We will hold a group discussion with our guest speakers from Strathcona Community Policing Centre. Our guest speakers will discuss topics that over the years have been issues for Newcomers, Immigrants and International Students such as Losing immigration status, Substance/Alcohol use/overdose, Bullying & Harassment at the workplace/ homestay family, Assaults (physical, verbal, sexual), Identity theft, Sextortion, Housing and rental Issues, Hate crimes and Personal safety.
