To attract highly skilled tech workers to the Province, the Government of British Columbia has confirmed the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Tech Pilot Project is now permanent.

Initially launched in 2017, the program enables international students and foreign tech workers to receive nominations for permanent residence. The program also helps tech firms attract and retain global talent in the province’s increasingly growing and competitive technology sector. The skills immigration process provides a high-level overview of the program but you should refer to the program guide for the most current and complete information.

According to recent government figures, the Tech Pilot Project has supported over 6000 tech workers nominated for permanent residency in British Columbia.

Cornerstone College CEO William Gerrard said, “With some of the best I.T. training programs in the country, our graduates are well equipped to add value to the province’s rapidly growing tech industry. We are delighted to see the PNP Tech Pilot Project is now permanent.”

The BC PNP is administered in partnership with the federal government in accordance with the 2015.

Canada-British Columbia Immigration Agreement (CBCIA). The Government of Canada is responsible for allocating a limited number of nominations each year to British Columbia. The BC PNP Skills Immigration and Express Entry BC (EEBC) streams are intended for workers or international graduates with the skills, education and/or experience required for in-demand skilled occupations in B.C.

Skilled Talent Shortage

The Council of Canadian Innovators CCI has been lobbying the government to make the tech stream permanent. CCI’s Director of Government Affairs in British Columbia, Tessa Seager, said, “We applaud the government for heeding the calls from our members to extend the program indefinitely. This program is an efficient and effective way to address the province’s skilled talent shortage and support homegrown talent as they scale up globally.

The announcement of the PNP Tech Stream program becoming permanent was a key discussion point across social media chat rooms as professionals in the industry applauded the government’s decision to help deal with the chronic skills shortage in this crucial sector.
