Why is Health Insurance Important for Students in Canada?
Health is an important topic on everyone’s minds these days. The Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic changed the world in the blink of an eye.
As we learn to navigate this new life, we must work together to flatten the curve by taking care of our own health and the wellbeing of others.
Right now, July 2020, Cornerstone is in phase 1 of our safe re-opening. Selected students are coming to class. Masks and social distancing are mandatory.
Soon, Cornerstone will enter phase 2; a rotation schedule between in-class and virtual lessons. Of course, masks and social distancing will be mandatory.
And finally, phase 3; where we will be open again to all students for in-person classes. We are so excited for phase 3, but we know it will take time and we will not rush.
Because your success is our priority, but so is your health and the health of our hardworking staff.

Why is Health Insurance Important?
In British Columbia, international students who are studying on a valid study permit for 6 months or more must apply for the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP).
MSP covers emergency health care. It costs $75 CAD per month for all international students.
You can find out all about applying for MSP coverage here.
There are also many private health insurance companies in British Columbia. They offer monthly plans to cover emergency and non-emergency healthcare to both residents and international students in Canada.

The average cost of health insurance per month in British Columbia is $70CAD or more. This healthcare support can give you access to denial, optical, and other non-emergency medical support such as PharmaCare, physiotherapy, and more.
Without a Medical Services Plan or private health insurance, a simple visit to the doctor could cost you up to $200CAD and a broken bone could cost you much more than that!
Furthermore, a private trip to the dentist could cost up to $400, and a typical physiotherapy appointment costs between $85-150!
Health insurance can help you to save a lot of money in case something happens to you. So, that is why having health insurance is super important for international students and for anyone in Canada.
